Kadonation, an e-commerce company in the gifting sector, needed a cloud infrastructure that could support rapid growth and handle seasonal traffic peaks. The challenge was to improve scalability and deployment efficiency. The platform was migrated to Google Cloud, evolving from lift-and-shift to containerization and a serverless architecture. Challenge

Kadonation needed a scalable, cloud-based infrastructure to handle traffic spikes and reduce deployment friction during gifting campaigns.

We migrated their platform to Google Cloud with a phased approach: lift-and-shift, containerization with Kubernetes and serverless scaling via Cloud Run.

is a Belgian company that makes group gifting and business gifting easier with their user-friendly platform. They make it easy for teams and businesses to manage gifts quickly and effortlessly.

Challenge

A better infrastructure for scalability and speed

Kadonation needed a flexible and scalable cloud infrastructure to support their growing platform and rising user demand, especially during peak gifting seasons and new campaign launches. Their previous setup lacked the elasticity and automation needed for fast releases, efficient scaling and cost control. The challenge was clear: migrate to Google Cloud without disrupting business, while aiming for long-term agility and performance.

Solution

From lift-and-shift to serverless on Google Cloud

We kicked things off with a lift-and-shift migration to the Google Cloud Platform, a low-risk way to get familiar with the application architecture without a full redesign from day one. 

Key elements include:

  • Managed load balancer setup to intelligently handle traffic.

  • Cloud-native security features to improve protection.

  • A CI/CD pipeline to enable quick, reliable deployments.


Next, we began containerizing the application in manageable pieces and migrated them to Google Kubernetes Engine. With horizontal pod auto-scaling and automated deployments via Cloud Build, Kadonation’s platform became modular and responsive.

For even greater elasticity, we moved key workloads to Google Cloud Run, a serverless solution that auto-scales based on demand even down to zero when idle. This was a game-changer for handling campaign-related spikes and holiday surges with zero hassle and maximum cost-efficiency.
