How a scalable cloud platform for HLN.be made cycling safer in Flanders

DPG Media Group, a media company in the digital publishing sector, needed a high-performance platform to support VeloVeilig Vlaanderen, an initiative for reporting unsafe cycling locations. The challenge was to handle peak traffic during national news coverage while ensuring fast performance. A scalable web application was built on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). This resulted in a reliable, high-traffic platform that enables real-time reporting and improves cyclist safety across Flanders.

Build a scalable, high-performance web platform for HLN.be to support real-time, interactive map usage by thousands of users during media-driven traffic spikes. Without compromising speed or budget.

A custom cloud architecture on Google Cloud Platform with auto-scaling, smart caching and a responsive map interface to ensure smooth performance under heavy load.

Handled 2,000+ requests per second, delivered 97% of responses in under 1 second, and inspired local governments to take real action on reported cycling hazards. Make Flanders safer for everyone on two wheels.

Challenge

Quickly and automatically detect damaged pallets

DPG Media needed a high-performance cloud architecture that is capable of managing massive real-time engagement.The application has to serve over 10,000 concurrent users, each interacting with an interactive map, without compromising on speed or cost efficiency.

Solution

Scalable Google Cloud architecture 

We architected a tailored solution on the Google Cloud Platform, carefully selecting battle-tested auto-scaling components to withstand heavy loads. Together with Antenna, we developed a rock-solid system with:

  • Smart caching to keep load times low during traffic surges.

  • Auto-scaling infrastructure for cost-efficient performance on demand.

  • An interactive map interface to report and explore cycling danger zones.


The platform was designed to be robust, responsive and a smooth user experience. 

Result

Real-time performance at scale with measurable social impact

The numbers speak louder than bicycle bells. Once the project aired on national news, traffic spiked to over 2,000 requests per second. Still, our setup worked fine under pressure:

 

  • 97% of all requests were processed in under one second.

  • The system dynamically scaled without a hitch, keeping resource use and costs in perfect balance.

  • Local governments began acting on reported hotspots, paving the way (literally) for safer cycling routes across Flanders.

We love projects that blend technical challenge with social impact. With VeloVeilig Vlaanderen, we got both, and a few high-fives from the cycling community to boot.
