Ketnet wherever and whenever thanks to a new Ketnet eco system

Ketnet, a public media brand in the broadcasting and digital media sector, needed to revamp its fragmented ecosystem of apps and websites. The challenge was to define a clear product vision and improve user engagement for a young audience. Using Design Thinking, user research, and iterative development, a unified digital platform was created. This resulted in a data-driven ecosystem that continuously evolves based on user feedback, improving engagement and long-term scalability.

About VRT

The VRT is the Flemish public TV and radio broadcasting organisation that is home to well-known media brands such as één, StuBru, Ketnet and Sporza. In all, the broadcasting organization runs three TV channels and six radio networks, whilst providing extra digital services and a comprehensive internet and mobile offering.

Challenge

Creating a unified digital product vision

Ketnet is VRT’s children’s and youth tv network that offers a broad digital ecosystem including apps, websites, and interactive content. To better serve its young audience (ages 6-13), Ketnet needed a comprehensive digital transformation in technology and user experience.

Key challenges for Ketnet included:

  • Defining a clear and unified product vision.
  • Implementing design thinking to guide development.
  • Setting priorities and determine the most valuable features.

To realize this, Ketnet looked for a partner to help shape the right digital strategy while keeping children's needs at the center (💙 customer centricity).

Solution

Strategic digital product management that brings together business, technology and users

To align business, technology, and user needs, ACA Group facilitated strategic sessions with Ketnet’s editorial team, management, and VRT’s technology department.

Key steps taken during this process:

1. Discovery phase
  • Conducted user interviews with children (ages 6-13) to understand how they interact with Ketnet’s digital products.
  • Observed their use of other digital platforms to identify expectations and engagement drivers.
  • Defined the core features that add the most value.
2. Prototyping & testing
  • Developed multiple prototypes and proof-of-concepts based on discovery insights.
  • Iterated designs with direct feedback from children to ensure alignment with their needs.
  • Refined and validated beta versions before full implementation.
3. Roadmap implementation
  • Created a phased development roadmap, ensuring a structured approach from design to launch.
  • Conducted interim user testing to refine features before release.

Along with establishing a clear vision, we also launched a Discovery pathway. Over the course of this pathway, we had various interviews with core users of the Ketnet ecosystem, i.e. children aged 6 to 13. This taught us how they used the Ketnet products at the time and what their expectations are. In addition, through observations, we also looked at which other digital products they are using and why they like these products. In doing so, we defined the main features that create added value for children.

Based on the results of this Discovery phase, we worked up various prototypes and proof-of-concepts to experiment with the opportunities defined earlier on and to run our findings and Ketnet’s vision by the children. Further to a few iterations, we came up with beta versions and fully finished features.

A new digital experience for children

Since the launch of the new Ketnet ecosystem, the platform has continuously evolved to meet the needs of its young audience. The new app and website offer a smooth, engaging experience, bringing together video, games, and interactive storytelling in a way that resonates with children aged 6 to 13.

By integrating user feedback and data-driven insights, the platform has grown into a dynamic digital space that keeps children entertained, informed, and engaged. Features such as the video zone and interactive content have significantly increased user engagement, while ongoing updates ensure the platform remains fresh and relevant.

More than just a one-time launch, this transformation has set the foundation for a future-proof ecosystem. Through continuous iteration and innovation, Ketnet continues to offer an enriching digital experience... wherever and whenever its audience wants it!
